In the Hospital of St. Raphael, September 23, 2007, Elise Marie Free Kelso, 89, of 200 Leeder Hill Rd., Hamden, formerly of Hodder Dr., Hamden Widow of James Campbell Kelso. Mother of James Michael and his wife Sue Ellen Gray Kelso of Singapore; grandmother of Jamie Taggart Kelso of Brooklyn, NY and sister of the late Allan Free, Jr. Elise was born in Topeka, KS on August 27, 1918, the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Allan Free Sr. She was a secretary for the Yale University School of Law for over 20 years before her retirement. Prior to that she worked for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) in Displaced Persons Operations located in Germany . She also worked for a number of other government agencies including the FAO and US Department of State. Elise was an avid bridge player and loved to travel. Funeral Services will be held in Dunbar United Church of Christ , 419 Dunbar Hill Rd., Hamden, Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007 at 3:00 PM. Burial will follow in the church columbarium. Memorial contributions may be made to The Hospital of Saint Raphael, Critical Care Unit, 1450 Chapel Street , New Haven, CT 06511. Arrangements under the direction of BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 WHITNEY AVE. , Hamden .

  1. I will always remember Aunt Elise for her wit, wonderful stories of her travels, and most for her lovely singing voice. She sang a wonderful song(I think it was German)with my mother and Uncle Joe when the family got together. In recent years she seemed to take great pleasure in giving lessons in the English language and in her bridge game. I will miss our telephone conversations.
