Elizabeth Summerville Mayo, age 101, of Hamden, CT, passed away on September 2, 2023. Elizabeth was born in Butler, PA on January 4, 1922 to the late Warren and Ethel Douglas Summerville. After graduating from Grove City College in 1943, she worked in Washington, DC, where she met her husband, Clyde Mayo. They were married in 1945 and moved to Springfield, IL, eventually moving to Rochester, NY, where Clyde worked for Xerox and where they had four children. Elizabeth and Clyde were married for over 50 years until his death in 1999. While living in Rochester they enjoyed a summer home on Canandaigua Lake, one of the Finger Lakes in New York. After living in Rochester, they moved for a few exciting years to London, then settled down in Westport, New Haven, Southbury and finally Hamden. Elizabeth was a lifelong church member and read the Bible daily in one of the many translations she owned. She loved reading and often had several books next to her favorite chair in her apartment at Whitney Center. She read countless books on British history, American history, personal biographies, and mysteries. Among her other hobbies-she was an excellent cook and loved music, art and manicures-always pink or red. She will be greatly missed.
Elizabeth is survived by her three daughters and their husbands, Deborah and Gary Webb, Katherine and Chris Garrard, and Margaret and David Phelps; her son, James Mayo; five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Louise, and brother, Joseph.
