Hays Jones, 92, a resident of Hamden for 50 years, died at home, Aug. 29, 2002. He was born in Mt. Vernon, NY, Sept. 25, 1909 and was a direct desendent of Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution and mayor of New Haven. He was the son of the late Hays and Alice Hillman Jones and attended Colby Academy in New London, NH and Colgate University in Hamilton, NY. During WW II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific, including the battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima, and witnessed the original flag raising of Mt. Surabachi. He was employed by the Lomas & Nettleton Co. for nearly 40 years and retired in 1974. He served in both elected and appointed offices in Hamden, including the RTM, Board of Finance and Conservation Commission. He was married for over 60 years to the late Mary Cooke Jones. He leaves a son, Hays Jones of Snowmass, CO; three daughters, Alice Louise Chorin of Berkeley, CA, Edith Huntington Jones Dobelle of Honolulu, HI, and Mary-Ellen Jones of Washington, DC; and three grandsons, Ethan Daniel Chorin, Hays ''Buck'' Jones and Harry Huntington Dobelle.
