Howard Robert Brereton, Retired NHPD, 76, of Hamden, passed away on October 7, 2015. Howie was the beloved husband of 50 years to Gloria Bradley Brereton. Born April 27, 1939 to the late Howard and Lillian Mitchell Brereton. Howie will be remembered by his daughters and sons-in-law, Jane & Sean Smyth of Hamden and Laura Ann & Paul Dagostino of East Haven; his grandchildren: Alex Hodge, Paul & Joseph Dagostino, and Hannah & Quinn Smyth; his sisters: Joan Shay of Orange and Roberta Brereton of Hamden, as well as many nieces & nephews. Predeceased by his siblings, Donald Brereton and Margaret Mary Cronan. For 30 years Howie was a New Haven police officer, retiring in 1992 as a Detective Sergeant. He was a proud U.S. Marine and a retired member of the Emerald Society. After the police force, he enjoyed working for New Haven Chiropractic Offices, driving patients to and from their appointments. He loved music, especially the oldies. He enjoyed his time with his family and being at the shore, whether in East Haven, Cape Cod, or Fort Myers, FL. Traveling was another love of his, especially the adventures to Greece and Ireland, and the many cruises he took with his wife and close friends. Howie was loved by everyone who knew him and will be forever missed. Funeral from BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave, Hamden on Monday, October 12th at 10:00 a.m. to Celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Rita's Church at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be private at a later date. Friends are invited to visit with his family on Sunday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
