On October 20, 2023, Perra Hecht Rose, our much-loved mother and
grandmother, died at the age of 99 in Hamden, Connecticut.
Perra was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 23, 1924 to Esther
and Morris Hecht. A talented, hardworking student, she graduated from
Peabody High School in 1941, a year early. She then entered the University
of Pittsburgh, where she earned a BS in Commercial Education, graduating
cum laude.
Over the years, she worked in a variety of administrative positions,
including Office Manager for the Pittsburgh area B’nai Brith Hillel
Foundation, where she especially enjoyed working with students.
However, the job that most shaped all our lives was her first one as
Assistant to the Placement Director at Pitt. While helping soldiers returning
from WW II, she was introduced to our father, Seemen J. (Sonny) Rose.
They married in 1948 and raised four children together until his death in
1967.
The things Perra loved were legion: Shakespeare, crosswords, musicals of
Lerner and Lowe, every song Frank Sinatra ever sang, all things Italian, Sean
Connery in every role he ever played, volunteering at the Mt. Lebanon
Library, the Pittsburgh Steelers, T-shirts from all over the world, winters in
Florida, Dairy Queen, big cats, and, above all, her children and
grandchildren.
Perra leaves behind her children Sherri Rose, Louis Rose (Cindy), Harold
Rose (Michal) and Allen Rose (Beth Hahn); grandchildren Samantha Rose
(Asif Siddiky), Clelia Rose, Asher Rose, Jonathan Rose, Michael Rose (Sarah
Kelley), and Doron Rose; and her great-granddaughter Layla Rose-Siddiky.
Those wishing to celebrate Perra can make donations in her name to the
Mt. Lebanon Public Library: https://mtlebanonlibrary.org/265/Donate.
A virtual memorial service will be held at a later date.
