Rebekah Elizabeth Lyas, 45, of Wallingford, beloved wife of Benjamin Lyas, passed away on January 17, 2025 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Seoul, Korea on September 5, 1979, Rebekah came to America that December, a Christmas miracle to her parents, Deborah Dennis Ohlsen and the late James Ohlsen.
Besides her husband and mother, Rebekah will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Marie Elena and Ruby EmmaJane; sisters, Dale (Norman) Briere and Danielle Ohlsen. She was predeceased by her son, James Edward.
After growing up in Hamden and graduating from Cheshire Academy, Rebekah earned her master’s degree from Southern Connecticut State University. She went on to work in managerial rolls for Colombus House and Immacare. Her latest position as Executive Director was with South Park Homeless Shelter in 2024. She was also an active board member of Journey Home and Winning Ways. With her huge heart, Rebekah was consistently drawn to helping anyone in need. As a talented artist she enjoyed making her own greeting cards and had a knack for party planning. Above anything else, Rebekah will be remembered as a devoted wife, cherished daughter, spirited sister, and selfless mother. To have known Rebekah was to have loved her.
Funeral from Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home, 2300 Whitney Ave, Hamden on Friday, January 24th at 10:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Rita’s Church at 11:00 a.m. followed by burial in All Saints Cemetery. Friends may visit with her family on Thursday evening from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
