Ruth Johanna Straub

Ruth Johanna Straub, formerly of Chamberlain Highway, Kensington, died on Friday, Oct. 26, 2007 in Rochester, NY. She was born in Meriden on August 18, 1919, daughter of Oscar Straub and Ida (Bauchmann) Straub. She graduated from Meriden High School in 1937, received her B.S. in Education from Teachers College of CT in 1941 and her Masters of Education from the University of Hartford (Hillyer College) in 1953. After teaching first grade at Smith School in West Hartford, Ruth continued working for the District as a reading consultant until her retirement. She was a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Meriden, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and actively served on many committees over the years. Ruth was a former president of the Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and also of the Connecticut Association for Reading Research. She was a member of the Connecticut and West Hartford retired teachers associations. She is survived by a niece, Robin Hoagland, of Pittsford, NY. A memorial service will be held Monday, November 12 at 11:00 am at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 164 Hanover St., Meriden. Contributions in Ruth's memory may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church Library, the American Diabetes Association, or to the Arthritis Foundation. The Beecher & Bennett-Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden is in charge of arrangements.
