Howard A. Lohmann, “Sr.”, 89, husband of 54 years to Gail Diehm Lohmann, passed away at his home in Meriden on October 29, 2025. Born in Meriden on October 5, 1936, he was a son of the late Herman and Hazel (Maronde) Lohmann. Howard was predeceased by his brothers Carl, Leroy, and Kenny Lohmann. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons; Howard Lohmann, his wife Ivelisse, and their four children, Amanda, Brenden, Ariana, and Xavier, Hans Lohmann, and Erik Lohmann, his wife Lisa, and their two children, Parker and Reed.
Born on the Chamberlain Highway during the Depression, Howard was the youngest of four brothers. As a lifelong resident of Meriden, he graduated from Meriden High in 1954 and later was drafted into the Army. After his military service, he was employed by C.S. Mersick in their hardware division. After quickly moving up the ladder, he was promoted to L.L. Ensworth, a sister company, in Hartford selling steel as well. In 1972, he left to start his own business, Logan Associates, from his barn, which later became Logan Steel Inc. While getting business off the ground, he had many side jobs to make ends meet, such as delivering newspapers, being a school bus driver, and a driver’s ed teacher, as well as selling Christmas trees while drinking Rock & Rye to stay warm. He had a keen sense of business and with the help of a strong network of vendors, he built a loyal customer base. As the business grew, Gail was able to leave her night job at Stanley Works and join Howard while raising their three young boys. Fifty-three years later, he left behind a very successful company, employing nearly one hundred people with the help of family, as well as Eddie, Z-Man, and many others.
Howard worked seven days a week, but when you couldn’t find him at the office, he and Gail enjoyed time at their campsite in Canaan. He was an avid weekend golfer with his friends Mark, Bobby, Chuck, and others over the years. Later in life, he fulfilled his dream of having a farm where he raised animals, baled hay, and made wine alongside his family. Howard had many friends including Billy “Rev,” Tony, Nitsche, Muzzy, and Donnie, among many, many others. He was a fixture of the Meriden community, a member of the Eagles and the Lions Club, and well-respected in the steel industry. He will be greatly missed.
Friends and relatives are invited to visit with Howard’s family on Sunday, November 2nd from 2:00-5:00 p.m. in Beecher & Bennett-Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. Sorry I can’t attend and pay my respects to my Friend Howie Sr. I am healing from Broken ribs, Fractured Vertebrae in my neck and back.. Rest in Peace
My brother Dennis & I were friends with Howie for 50+ years. Dennis worked at Mersick with him & we all spent many days at the Eagles Club. Also, great memories of him with Bill at Firestone. He had a great sense of humor & was sharp as a tack. Dennis & I worked on the building on North Colony when he first expanded. May he rest in peace.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Nicholas and Kathleen Gosselin
