Joseph “Joe” Allen, 41, of Shelton, passed away peacefully at his home on April 14, 2026, after a courageous and long-fought battle with leukodystrophy.
Joe was born on June 17, 1984, in East Haven to his mother, Carol Erickson Allen. He attended East Haven schools and graduated from East Haven High School in 2002. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science from the University of Connecticut in 2006, followed by a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Sacred Heart University in 2009.
Upon completing his doctorate, Joe began his career as a Physical Therapist with Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine Centers (PTSMC). In 2016, he became a partner and director in the company, proudly opened his own facility in Newington. Joe was deeply connected to the Newington community, which he loved wholeheartedly. He was an active participant in numerous local and business events and took great pride in sharing his passion for health, wellness and lifelong learning with others. Joe also was honored to serve as an adjunct professor at Sacred Heart University and the University of Hartford, where he inspired future generations of physical therapists with his enthusiasm and dedication to the field.
Joe was actively involved in the Connecticut Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and participated in various civic organizations. Shortly before his passing, the Connecticut Chapter of the APTA created an award in his name to honor his legacy of leadership, service, dedication, and the profound impact he had on colleagues, students, and patients.
Joe married Tracey Krystiniak in July 2013 and was a loving father to his two daughters whom he adored. Joe had a love for physical activity and took great pride in completing numerous half marathons and road races over the years, in addition to staying active in local basketball leagues. His energy, determination and positive spirit were reflected in all aspects of his life.
Joe was preceded in death by his brother, David Paul Allen; his uncle, David George Erickson; his maternal grandparents, Lenora Lupoli Erickson and Ivar Kenneth Erickson; Great Aunt, Geraldine Lupoli, and his paternal grandparents, Francis and Marilou Erickson.
He is survived by his former spouse, Tracey Allen; his beloved daughters, Madalyn and Olivia Allen; his mother, Carol Allen and her partner Gerald Halasz; his brother, Paul Allen and wife Melanie; and his aunts and uncles, Carmelia and Robert Erickson, Kenneth Erickson, and Gwen and John Cook.
Joe’s legacy extends far beyond his accomplishments; it lives on in the countless patients whose lives he improved, the students he inspired, and the colleagues who admired his leadership and integrity. He approached his work with uncommon dedication, blending deep expertise with genuine empathy. Joe believed in lifting others up — in helping people move, heal, and thrive — and he did so with humility and grace. His influence will continue to shape the physical therapy community for generations to come. Joe’s life was defined by service, compassion, and love, and those who knew him will carry his spirit forward always.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Cleval Ball, Joe’s dedicated aide; the doctors and nurses at Massachusetts General Hospital, especially Dr Florian Eichler and Dr. Yedda Li and Hartford Healthcare Hospice Services for their exceptional care, compassion, and support.
Funeral arrangements have been provided by Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home in Hamden. Service and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the United Leukodystrophy Foundation at www.ULF.org or to your local animal shelter.
