Dr. Donald A. Brand, PhD, of New Haven, CT, died on May 5, 2023, after a long illness supported by hospice care in his home. He is survived by Catherine, his wife of 30 years; his sons Jeffrey (Kelly) and Thomas (Rebecca); his stepson Peter (Janine); ten grandchildren; and the mother of his sons, Gabriella Brand.
Don graduated with a BS in Physics from Antioch College in 1968, received his Master’s in History of Science from the University of Wisconsin in 1970, and completed his MPhil and PhD in Decision Sciences from Yale University in 1976.
He worked at Yale University as Assistant Director and later the Co-Director of the Trauma Program, Department of Surgery. He also was Associate Director for Research at Yale’s School of Management. He was honored to be the Scientific Advisor for the European Urban Health Indicators System (2011-2012).
His most recent career was as Director of Primary Care Research at New York Medical College (1995-2007), and he retired as Director of Outcomes Research at NYU Langone, Long Island, in 2019.
Don worked with clinicians to develop protocols to improve healthcare outcomes. He wrote grants and contributed scientific papers to JAMA, the New England Medical Journal, and the Journal of Medical Decision Making. His contributions to science were in emergency medicine, timing of organ transplantation, and infant health.
But Don is best known as a loving husband, committed father, fun and engaging grandfather, continual learner, gifted listener, and a friend to all.
A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in his honor to the Connecticut Hospice in Branford, CT.
