Resided in: North Haven, CT

Maureen Frances “Mo” Cunningham, 81, took her final bow on Wednesday, July 16th, 2025, at Evergreen Woods in Branford, Connecticut, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born July 22, 1943 in New Bedford, Massachusetts to Frances Burns and Ellsworth Cunningham, Maureen was the eldest of four. She leaves behind her loving siblings, Dennis Cunningham (Betsy) and Peter Douvarjo, and joins her predeceased brother Timothy Cunningham. A proud mom, she cherished her two children, Diane Eldridge Cusimano (Dan) and Stephen Eldridge (Dorinda), and was the proud grandmother to four amazing grandchildren: Thomas Cusimano, Julia Catricala (Tom), Alicia Eldridge, and Nicole Cusimano, as well as a loving great-grandmother to young Levi Catricala.

Maureen’s heart danced to the rhythm of music. An accomplished violinist, she led the All Massachusetts Youth Symphony Orchestra as first violin and concertmistress, taking center stage at Carnegie Hall in 1959. For many years, she continued to shine as the first violin and concertmistress for the Little Symphony Orchestra in Hamden. During her high school days at Fairhaven High School (MA), she was not only the head cheerleader but also served up smiles as a car hop at A&W Root Beer.

A true community champion, Maureen dedicated over 50 years to volunteering, including her lead role at The Barn Sale of Hamden, a charitable consignment shop. She led and rallied more than 500 volunteers for the 1995 Special Olympics World Summer Games in New Haven and hosted the annual Jeff and Joel’s House Party, where traditional jazz bands from around the globe filled the air with joy.

Maureen’s career at Yale University spanned over 30 years, where she served as a registrar and executive administrator in the Department of Religious Studies and the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. While at Yale, she was a trailblazer, working tirelessly to help admit women as members of Mory’s Temple Bar in March 1974.

Join us in remembering Maureen at Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home, 2300 Whitney Avenue, Hamden, on Tuesday, July 29th between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm, with her Prayer Service to be held at 6:30 pm in the funeral home. 7. Will miss your welcoming hello at the Barn, Maureen. Prayers and condolences to your family.

  8. We met in high school, we both moved from our beloved Massachusetts to Connecticut, we both worked at Yale, and we have stayed in touch all the years since then. Losing lifetime friends is so very difficult, but you will remain in my heart and memory until I join you. My sincere condolences to your beloved children.

  9. Diane and Steve know how much you’ve meant to me. I will laugh whenever I think about the hundreds of wonderful, unforgettable moments we had. Dancing at Basil’s, you chasing me and yelling because I let the bride have way too much fun before the wedding, strategizing against the ward bosses… you definitely made a difference in so many people’s lives that you will be remembered with great love and maybe no small amount of dread. Dread that you might chose to speak your mind or take up a gauntlet. Beautiful is too benign a word to apply to you, but you sure were gorgeous. Full of all of the complexities and richness of life. I will laugh with you when I think about you tossing your head back and laughing at a bawdy joke or a tale of irony. You did not stack up a lot of academic degrees but you surely educated legions of Yalies in your own way. This lovely site asks folks to sign the guestbook and light a candle… I can’t help thinking you would have preferred that we went with more fireworks. To all who truly knew you, what I’ve said requires little explanation. For those who did not know her so well, my condolences for missing out on the party. I will love you always, Mama Mo.

  10. It is with great sorrow for the passing of my good friend Maureen.
My deepest empathy to all her family & grieving friends.
Maureen & I were close teenage to present day friends. I would always say we were friends since we all had dark hair. She was also a young protege of my mom, Grace Bove, who was the original founder of the Barn Sale, going back to the 1950s.
So many of us were so lucky to have Maureen as a great lifetime friend.
Although I have to admit to shedding more than a few tears, I know Our Lord will gently hold her in His loving arms.
We shared so many wonderful times & moments together.
God bless you my dear friend.
Those who have passed before you will have a special place reserved for you at God’s table.
Many prayers & blessings will be sent your way.
With much love to my lifelong friend,
Chuck Bove, & the Bove family.
