Rev. Eugene J. Charman, entered into eternal life on March 25, 2025, the solemnity of the Annunciation. Fr. Gene was born in Newport, RI on March 10, 1944 to the late Genevieve (Grudzinski) Charman and Eugene R. Charman. Fr. Gene spent his childhood growing up along the shoreline and was a proud alumni of Notre Dame High School in West Haven. It was at Notre Dame where he first encountered the Brothers of the Holy Cross, who were essential in forming Fr. Gene into a Christian man of faith. After graduating from Notre Dame, Fr. Gene attended Stonehill College, where he studied physics, and decided to pursue a calling to religious life and entered the Novitiate of the Brothers of the Holy Cross. Discerning that he was called to the priesthood, Fr. Gene began studying for the Archdiocese of Hartford at Theological College in Washington, D.C., and was ordained to the priesthood on May 22, 1971 by Archbishop John F. Whealon at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford. Upon ordination, Fr. Gene was assigned to St. James in Manchester. Fr. Gene loved his priesthood and his many assignments in Southington, Woodbridge, West Haven, Oakville, Cheshire, Orange, and North Haven. In his priesthood, Fr. Gene was an early computer guru, and was tasked with helping to implement computers into many of the parishes of the Archdiocese. In time after evading becoming a pastor for many years, Fr. Gene was assigned to St. Thomas Becket parish as the administrator and later pastor in 2000, and stayed there until 2012, when he was assigned as pastor to Holy Infant parish in Orange. Fr. Gene retired as a priest of the Archdiocese of Hartford in 2019, and in retirement helped out in many parishes in the greater New Haven area. Fr. Gene enjoyed studying John Henry Newman, the sarum rite, and all things technological. Father was predeceased by his sisters, Patricia O’Brien and Barbara Hughes, and is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Fr. Gene will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Christopher J. Coyne, Archbishop of Hartford on Monday, March 31 at 11 a.m. at St. Bridget of Sweden Parish, 175 Main St., Cheshire, CT. The Mass will be live streamed on St. Bridget of Sweden’s Facebook page. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I am deeply saddened to learn of Father Gene’s passing. I came to know him well when he was the pastor of Holy Infant Church in Orange. What a wonderful, gentle man and even better priest! I had the good fortune of running into him at Mass at St. Vincent de Paul in East Haven after his retirement, and he shared that he was enjoying his retirement while living there. I will always have fond memories of him. May you rest in eternal peace, Fr. Gene, a good and faithful priest. 🙏🏼

  2. I will miss you dearly Fr. Charmin. A very engaging loving priest. Rest in God’s Peace…. until we meet again

  3. Eugene Charman was my uncle, my mother’s brother. Uncle Gene was in seminary while I was growing up (and we lived far apart) so we didn’t see him often. However, we reconnected several years ago. I learned that he was an expert at genealogies and all things computer. He also loved to travel to places that had houseboats, so he could stay on the houseboats overnight. Uncle Gene was funny and had a keen sense of humor. He encouraged me to interject more fun and adventure into my life and to not be too serious or work too much – great advice! I’m glad I got to know him better. He will be missed.

  4. My parents and I met Father Gene when he was the pastor at Holy Infant Church. My Dad, a Protestant, enjoyed Father Gene’s sermons very much. He was a wonderful, kind man and Priest. Rest in Peace and know you will always be remembered.

  5. Gene Charman was our uncle, the brother of our mom Pat O’Brien. Gene was younger than his two sisters and they adored him. Gene lovingly came to Florida to visit our mom who had Alzheimer’s for many years. She remembered and talked often of her brother. We are grateful for all of the love he showed our family. 6. Fr. Gene was the pastor of St. Thomas Beckett when our children were little. When we heard of his passing my family and I were so saddened. We reminisced about all the different ways Father Gene related to the parishioners young and old alike. For example, his inviting all the children to the altar to celebrate mass with him, the questions and answers at Christmas time that earned the correct answer giver five dollars, the Halloween parties, the M&M’s during lent, the Easter Egg Hunts. The coffee – and, the fishpond, the train in the parish center and so many other activities that brought us all together as a parish family. St. Thomas Beckett was where my children learned to ride their bikes and eventually learned to drive, and where Father Gene would say “Please do not use my car to learn to parallel park with.” It was a place where we all felt that we belonged, and that was because of Father Gene. What a legacy he leaves behind. Rest in peace Father Gene.

  7. Fr. Gene,
Working as your secretary at Holy Infant Church in Orange was special.
You were always kind to your staff and helpful to the parishioners, who loved and respected you so much. You will be missed.
