Richard Raoul Chevalier, age 91, of North Haven, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on January 14, 2026, at the St. Raphael Campus of Yale New Haven Hospital. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on December 28, 1934, he was the son of the late Raoul and Marie (Christiansen) Chevalier.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife of over 65 years, Beverly (Quinn) Chevalier. He was predeceased by his cherished daughter, Susan E. Mommsen of Cleburne, Texas; is survived by his son, Richard M. Chevalier of Newport, New Hampshire, and by his daughter, Judith A. Chevalier of New Haven; and by his children’s partners, Paul, Pamela, and Steven. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Richard, Alyssa, Brooke, Olivia, Liam, and Simon; his great-grandchildren, Aiden and Zoey; his sister, Joan (Chevalier) Good; and his longtime caregiver, Karen Rowe.
A resident of Hamden for most of his life, Richard spent his career as an engineer with Praxair Surface Technologies in New Haven and was a longtime member of the American Society for Metals. Over the course of his career, he took pride in his work on technologies that helped improve the safety and durability of aircraft. He previously worked for Winchester Repeating Arms in New Haven and for the City of New Haven.
Richard found great joy in building clocks, furniture, and toys for his grandchildren as they were growing up, and he was an avid fan of IndyCar racing. He was a passionate photographer, and his family is fortunate to have the memories that he preserved.
Friends may attend his funeral service at 10:00 a.m. on January 24, 2026, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 65 North Main Street, Wallingford, Connecticut, with a reception at the church immediately following. Interment will be private. Contributions in Richard’s memory may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (Altar Guild) or to Horizons at the Foote School in New Haven, Connecticut.
