Virginia 'Jean' M. Courtney

February 14, 1927 ~ February 24, 2011
Virginia M. 'Jean' Courtney, 84, of Hamden, passed away on February 24, 2011. She was born in New Haven on February 14, 1927 to the late Stephen and Ellen Curran Courtney. Virginia leaves her sisters, Eileen Tozzo & her husband Donald & Kathleen Page all of Hamden and Theresa 'Terri' White & her husband Paul of Northford; eleven nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her brothers, Stephen, Donald, and John Courtney and brother-in-law, Kenneth Page. Virginia grew up in the Newhallville section of New Haven before moving to Hamden in 1986. She worked for G&O Manufacturing for 47 years as a time clerk. Some of her favorite past times had been bowling and bingo. She always enjoyed the company of her friends at Davenport. Virginia's family and friends will miss her quiet but funny personality. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Church on Tuesday, March 1st at 10 a.m. followed by a burial in St. Lawrence Cemetery. Friends may visit with her family at BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden, on Tuesday morning from 8 to 9:15 a.m. Contributions in Virginia's memory may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 538 Preston Ave., Meriden, CT 06450 or the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Dr., Wallingford, CT 06492.
One thing I will always remember about Aunt Jean is how she was a fixture at all family gatherings, sitting at the main table and quietly laughing along. Aunt Jean always asked how school was going, how you were doing in sports and never failed to remember your birthday or an important holiday. There was always a card with a gift taped to the inside, even for the children of her many nieces and nephews. She had her own language, in a way. Even if you were having trouble hearing her over the din created by the family, you knew what she was trying to communicate. She was also quick with a joke or a jab in a good-natured way, too. Her sense of humor was always present, which in a person otherwise so quiet was an endearing trait. That presence, so steady and constant, is a loss to our family that will never be filled. We all love you and will miss you, Aunt Jean.
Eileen, Don – our thoughts are with you at this time
Eileen, Terri and Kathleen, My mother, Hannah O’Connor, always felt love for the Courtney family. I wish to extend condolences on the loss of your dear, sweet sister Jean.
May Angels be with you Jeannie on your way home
Our deepest sympathy in the loss of your beloved sister, Virginia Jean. Love,
Our Thoughts and Prayers go out to your family. My mom (Helen Lyons) and Jeannie were good friends growing up. When I was young, Jeannie always came over to visit. She was always loving and caring to our family. My mom has Alzheimer’s or she would have been at the services.
