Anne D. (Mascola) Ciardiello, 91, of Hamden, beloved wife of 62 years to the late Saverio J. (Sam) Ciardiello, passed away at Connecticut Hospice on Tuesday, December 22, 2020. Born in East Haven July 26, 1929, she was the daughter of the late John and Anna (Constanzo) Mascola. Anne is survived by her five children; Steven (Dina) Ciardiello of Woodbridge, Peter (Rose) Ciardiello of Guilford, Rosanne (Dana) Leavitt of North Attleboro, MA, Paula (Andrew) Wilkes of Hamden, and Richard (Lyssette) Ciardiello of Guilford, twelve grandchildren; Steven, Lauren, Kristen, Rebecca, Matthew, Sarah, Michael, Nicole, Kevin, Victoria, Gabriella, and Nicholas, sisters Lori Esposito of Branford and Gail Gaffney of Waukesha, WI; brother Robert Mascola of North Reading, MA, and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her sisters Adele Mascola of East Haven, Marie Doiron of Beacon Falls, and her brother John Mascola of East Haven. Anne was a graduate of East Haven High School Class of 1947, where she was Class Valedictorian and received The Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award. She went on to study at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science in 1951. She went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Science at the University of Connecticut in 1952. After receiving her Master’s Degree, Anne worked in virus research at the Yale Medical School Department of Preventative Medicine. Working alongside Dr. Dorothy Horstman and in conjunction with Dr. Albert Sabin, they aided in the development and testing of the Sabin vaccine used in polio immunization. After raising her five children, Anne returned to school, earning a Master’s Degree in Education at Southern Connecticut State College and her certification to teach science in the secondary school system. She taught junior high and high school science until her retirement in 1996. Anne served as a Eucharistic Minister and CCD teacher at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Hamden for many years. Anne devoted her life to her family, all of whom will miss her dearly.
Friends may attend her Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated Saturday December 26th at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Whitney Ave, Hamden. Her entombment will follow in All Saints Mausoleum, North Haven. Face masks and social distancing must be observed. For those unable to attend, a live stream of the Mass will be available on the church’s website, www.olomc.org. Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home is in care of her arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations to the CT Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org/ct, can be made in Anne’s memory.
