Beatrice Mary Macchio, 98, of New Haven, passed away on January 8, 2017. Born in Stamford on May 24, 1919 to the late Nicola and Maria Piccirilli Albonizio. Beatrice grew up in Stamford, having graduated from Stamford High School. During WWII she worked for Phillips Manufacturing supporting the troops. She was a secretary for the Ford Company, although she longed to be a fashion designer. Her family still has many of her drawings. Beatrice spent uncountable hours volunteering over the years for the Red Cross and YNHH. She was also the neighborhood babysitter for many families in the Trumbull and Bridgeport area. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed crosswords, bingo, and bus trips to the casino; though most of all, Beatrice loved her children and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Beatrice will be remembered by her daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia & Michael DeMatteo of Hamden, Frances & David Foucher of Derry, NH; grandchildren, Michael (Jesika) DeMatteo, Christopher DeMatteo, and Ian (Lauren) Foucher; great-grandchildren, Lyla & Isabelle Foucher, Daniella DeMatteo, and Tyler Willoughby, and many devoted nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her grandson, Jonathon DeMatteo, and her siblings. Her family would like to thank the staff at Whitney Manor for the excellent care shown to their mom during this last year. Friends may visit with the family on Friday morning, January 12th, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. in St. Rita’s Church. Burial to take place in All Saints Cemetery. Contributions in Beatrice’s memory may be sent to the Jonathon P. DeMatteo Scholarship Fund, c/o Webster Bank, 2855 Dixwell Ave., Hamden, CT 06518.

  2. Bea was a wonderful volunteer at Yale New Haven Hospital. At Volunteer Services, we looked forward to Fridays when Bea and her friend, Ethel, will come in to help at the office. Bea had a wonderful sense of humor, it was a pleasure to know her. Please accept our condolences, may the great memories that you have help you with your loss. In sympathy, Annie Garcia Kaplan, former Volunteer Coordinator at YNHH.
