Bernice Skinner Hemingway
At her home, Sept. 4, 2002, Bernice Skinner Hemingway, 98, wife of Edwin P. Hemingway of South Rice St., Brevard, NC, formerly of West Haven and Branford, sister of Clare P. Linsley of Branford and the late Everett E. Skinner and Lillian W. Skinner. She was born, May 13, 1904 in New Haven, a daugher of the late Edward P. and Bernice Woodruff Skinner. She was a graduate of Fanny Smith Kindergarten Training School and was a kindergarten teacher in West Haven for 39 years. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of West Haven for 80 years, where she was active in the Keystone Group, was a member of the National, State of CT and West Haven Retired Teachers Associations. She played the piano for variety and minstrel shows in West Haven as well as for the residents of local convalescent home. Her funeral procession will leave BEECHER & BENNETT TAYLOR FUNERAL HOME, 410 Campbell Ave., West Haven , TUE. SEPTEMBER 10 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a graveside funeral service at Union Cemetery, 115 Derby Ave., Seymour. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at the First Congregational Church, West Haven, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 at 10:00 a.m. Contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Although I left kindergarten 55 years ago, I have not forgotten the kindness of a wonderful teacher to a child who had a great deal of trouble adjusting to school. I can hear her very quiet voice as she helped me each day. It worked…..I was a teacher for 37 years! Miss Skinner, as she was then, was a very special person.
