Born in: Santa Barbara, CA
Resided in: Hamden, CT

Carole Lee DeVore, 83, beloved wife and mother, passed away peacefully at Yale-New Haven Hospital on Thursday, December 15, 2022. Carole was a vibrant, creative presence-by turns a ballet dancer with the San Diego Starlight Opera, an exceptional teacher, a dedicated choir member, a moderator at the polls, a spice-driven cook, a dramatic storyteller, and an accomplished actress in community theater. She was a prolific knitter, keeping family, friends, and her community supplied with socks, scarves, and her famous Icelandic sweaters. She worked for 25 years at Yale University, first for the Psychology Department, then the Alumni Fund, and finally as an administrator for the Physics Department, where she helped keep the space-time continuum in balance. Raised in San Diego, she completed her B.A. at San Diego State, and a M.S.-Ed at Southern Connecticut State University.
Above all, Carole delighted in her family. She and her devoted husband of 39 years, Paul Stuehrenberg, were intrepid travelers, visiting over 40 countries and all 50 states, and she relished both time and trips with her two children, Paul and Elizabeth Outka, their spouses, Uma Outka and Trip Pollard, and her grandchildren, Katherine and Thomas Pollard, and Isaac and Juliet Outka, most recently spending time with all of them in Amsterdam in August 2022. She will be profoundly missed.
In addition to her immediate family, she leaves behind a brother, James DeVore (Polly), sister-in-law Sheila Hillberry (Joe), brother-in-law Daniel Stuehrenberg (Judy) and many friends and extended family. Those who went before her include her parents, James and Ada DeVore, her brother Dennis DeVore (Zella), and her sister-in-law, Eva Ness (David).
A memorial celebration of her life will be held Saturday, March 4, at 10 a.m. in Bethesda Lutheran Church, New Haven, CT, where she was a member for over 60 years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethesda’s music series.

  7. I am vey sorry to hear about the loss of Aunt Carole. She was always so vibrant and fun to be around. I never got to spend as much time as I would have liked with her. I am so grateful for the short visit we had here in San Diego before the pandemic shut down the world. She will be dearly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with her wonderful family, especially my cousins Elizabeth and Paul and my Uncle Paul.

  8. I will miss Carol, my fellow soprano and TLC lunch member at Bethesda Lutheran church. We will think of her every time wear her cozy and warm socks. She was a cozy and warm friend that I was honored to know. Blessing on Carol’s family at this sad time before Christmas.
