MERIDEN - Caroline Maskell "Papa" Curtis died peacefully on Jan. 16, 2006 at age 94 after a short illness. She was the widow of MacRae H. Curtis. Caroline was born on December 29, 1911 in Atlanta, Georgia, the daughter of the late James W. and Alice M. Maskell. She was a resident of Meriden since 1918, a graduate of Meriden High School (Class of '30). She is survived by a daughter, Joanne C. Island and husband, H. Clark of Hobe Sound, FL and a son, CDR. John M. Curtis (USN/Ret) and wife, Marcia of Virginia Beach, VA; by five grandchildren and their spouses: David and Tracy Island of Plano, TX, Lynn and David Shouse of Oxford, CT, Curt and Erin Island of Clarksville, MD, Jennifer and Victor Fettes of The Woodlands, TX and John and Amy Curtis of Gibsonia, PA; and by eleven great-grandchildren: Kristen and Steven Island, Emily and Bobby Shouse, Matthew, Olivia, Jack and Phoebe Island, Christopher and Caroline Fettes and Andrew Curtis. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Norma Maskell Noble and by several nieces and nephews. Caroline was a devoted wife and mother and was active at St. Andrew's Church, YWCA, Meriden Hospital Auxiliary, Daughters of the American Revolution and was an active bowler until the last few years. "Papa" will be missed by all who knew her and we rejoice at her entering into a new life. A service of celebration will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 20 Catlin St., Meriden, at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006. Interment in Walnut Grove Cemetery will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrew's Church.
