Charles Jacob Ferguson, Sr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Hamden, CT on June 11, 2023. Charles was born on December 17, 1934 in Fredericksburg, VA to the late James J. and Alma Wormley Ferguson. Charles accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was baptized as a member of Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site).

Charles attended Walker Grant High School. Following High School, Charles joined the United States Army. He was honorably discharged on August 20, 1957.

Charles relocated to New Haven, CT in 1953 soon after meeting the love of his life, Dorothy Sweat. Charles and Dorothy married on March 19, 1960. From that union came six beautiful children, Reginald, Angela, Patricia, Charlene, Charles Jr., and Willona.

Charles was employed as a Machine Operator at Pfizer in Wallingford, CT for 29 years, retiring in 1988. After his retirement, he worked various jobs to stay busy at Life Haven Women and Children Shelter and Burger King.

Charles was full of life and loved his family tremendously. Charles was always the life of the party at any family gathering or party he attended. He especially loved to dance. He also loved to play Horse Shoes and listen to his old school music. Some of his favorites were James Brown, Otis Redding and Fats Dominio. Charles also was an Assistant Coach for the Socialites Women’s Softball Team. He was a die-hard Washington Redskins fan and often enjoyed playing Bid Whist and Bowling in a League.

Charles leaves to mourn, his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Sweat Ferguson; his children, Reginald Ferguson (Voleta) of New Haven, CT, Angela Ferguson Gore of Hamden, CT, Patricia Duarte of East Haven, CT, Charlene Preston (Philip) of Hamden, CT, Charles Ferguson, Jr. (Beverly) of Fuquay-Varina, NC, and Willona Ferguson of New Haven, CT, four sisters, Brenda Jeter of Hamden, CT, Cora Ferguson (Frank), Janice Turner, and Barbara Bates (Nilon), all of Fredericksburg, VA, two sisters-in-law, Gertrude Grayson of Hamden, CT and Emily Ferguson of New Haven, CT, eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

Charles was preceded in death by his brothers, James “Fergie” Ferguson, William Ferguson, Welford Ferguson, Leon Ferguson, Edward Ferguson, Dennis Ferguson, and his twin brother Carl Ferguson, sisters, Harriett Ferguson, Sharon Ferguson, Juliet Owens, Lorraine Anderson and Alma Thorpe, and his favorite grandson, whom he affectionately adored, Moet Bacote.

Friends are invited to visit with his family on Saturday, June 17th at BEECHER & BENNETT FUNERAL HOME, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., followed by a Funeral Service celebrating his life at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home.
