I was very sad to see that the beloved Claire Sheahan has passed. She was my friend at TIAA for many, many years. She was the author of many TIAA Annual Reports and the Chairman’s Reports to the Board of Trustees. Claire was always a joy to work with. She approached her work in a highly professional manner, and also had a great sense of humor. She will be missed.

Claire Mather Sheahan died peacefully in Woodbridge on March 3, 2024. Born in Bridgeport on May 9, 1942, a daughter of the late Robert Elston and Ruth Allen Sheahan.
Before beginning kindergarten, her family moved to her father’s hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. Later at the age of twelve, she returned with her family to their beloved Connecticut, where two generations lived in the same house for the next 70 years. Claire was an honors graduate of Vassar College and an executive with TIAA-CREF for several decades. Manhattan was home for many years, where she was a member and visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art on a regular basis. She enjoyed returning to the Poughkeepsie campus to help plan class reunions and to support her alma mater in other ways. A lover of animals and wildlife, Claire was fond of riding horses, loved dogs, and was amused watching the deer and chipmunks in her yard. Her primary devotion was always to her family, generously and selflessly giving her time and resources to both her parents and to her late younger brother, Robert Allen Sheahan, as well as to her aunts and cousins.
Claire was a kind, giving person of strong integrity, who will be mourned and greatly missed by her many friends, colleagues, and extended family spread across the country.
Friends are invited to a Funeral Service on Friday, March 8th at BEECHER & BENNETT FUNERAL HOME, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden at 12:00 p.m. followed by her interment in East Side Cemetery, Woodbridge. Donations in Claire’s memory may be made to the Humane Society of the United States, 1255 23rd St. Northwest, Suite 450, Washington, DC, 20037.
