David B. Caldwell, age 58, of Bethany passed away June 16, 2023 after a brief illness. Born in New Haven on October 6, 1964, he is a son of, and is survived by, John W. and June (Kavanagh) Caldwell of Orange. Dave is also survived by sons Brandon M. Caldwell of Northford and Samuel M. Caldwell of Milford; Debby Christman, his loving partner of over 12 years with whom he shared a home; his sister Brenda L. Caldwell of Bethany; his brother Christopher J. Caldwell of Greenville, South Carolina, nieces Alani Gandossy, Eliza Caldwell, and Gina Caldwell, his favorite uncle Tom Kavanagh, and his beloved cat Willow. Dave was a graduate of Amity Regional High School and continued with trade school in auto mechanics. He lived in Cheshire, Orange and Bethany during his life. Dave was a skilled mechanic and could fix just about anything. He owned and operated Caldwell Power Equipment and now Caldwell Automotive, both in Hamden, for many years. He loved automotive repair, but also loved talking with and building relationships with his customers. His customers knew him as an honest mechanic and a great person, and rewarded him with their loyalty. Dave was an auto enthusiast. He enjoyed his cars and tractors, especially projects that he worked on with his sons. He was a proud owner of a 1971 Pontiac TransAm, which he restored. Dave enjoyed traveling with Debby and their friends on cruises and to auto racetracks. He also loved spending time with family and friends locally and at the family cottage in Maine, which he took pride in maintaining for the family. Dave was always there to help people in any way he could. He was funny and fun, and a loyal friend to many. He will be truly missed by everyone who knew him.

Such sad news to hear. I grew up with Dave. We went to Peck Place Elementary school together. I remember him always making me laugh. He was a great kid. Praying for his family.
I was so sad to hear about Dave’s passing! I am a customer who appreciated his knowledge and prompt service. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends. He was such a nice man and will be missed by many.
With heartfelt condolences,
Carolyn Kelly
Dave was my 1st friend in Orange at 5 yo. When we were at recess some of us would play ‘Lost in Space’. Dave always played the robot! When we started acting silly he would walk away saying “does not compute”, lol. He showed his mechanical inclination early on. I’m thankful we got back in touch, he checked on me after two major losses and helped me through it. My condolences to Deb and his family, he will be missed.
I met Dave at Amity. Such a nice guy….always funny and friendly.
Dave I will miss you my friend.
Dave, there are no words for how much you are missed, my dearest friend!
Debbie, Samy & Brandon, you are in my and my kids prayers.
Dave’s parents and mine have been the closest of friends since high school, so Dave and I really grew up together. All week I’ve been savoring and sharing memories of time with Dave on the Caldwell sailboat, at various holidays, birthdays and get togethers over the years, and especially at the cottages at Lake Keoka in Maine. Swimming, running around in the woods, Monopoly, and shouts of “gardez l’eau!” as someone got pushed off the raft or sprayed with the sink water meant for the dishes. Dave, you’ll be so missed by so many. Deepest condolences to Deb, your sons and the Caldwell family.
I didn’t have the pleasure of knowing Dave very well personally but I do know how much his family and friends loved him. I am holding the whole Caldwell Family close in my heart and send love and prayers to you for strength.
My deepest condolences, Chris Taylor Hogard
John and June, Debby, Brandon and Sammy, and Brenda and Chris, please know my thoughts are with you during this backwards and incomprehensible time. I’m so incredibly sorry.
My sympathies go out to all the family. June and John, I met you years ago through Dale Carnegie and Don Ibsen and feel your loss. My daughter died suddenly at the age of 58 so understand what you are going through. Every time I hear the song “Only The Good Die Young,” I am reminded of that day. Praying you find peace from our Heavenly Father.
