MERIDEN - Donald E. Winkel, 84, of 545 So. Curtis St., died Wednesday, October 2, 2002, in Chicago, IL. He was the husband of the late Frances Hayes Winkel. Born in Meriden on May 29, 1918, he was the son of the late Ernest A. and Catherine Flagg Winkel and was employed as a tool maker at New Departure. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Elks Club. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Gary Fredericks of Middletown; two sons and daughters-in-law, Sherwood W. and Dorothy Winkel of Chicago, IL and David H. and Doreen Winkel of Middletown; five grandchildren, Debra Winkel Burns and Karin Winkel Wethington, both of Illinois, and Justin Winkel, Jessica Winkel and Alison Fredericks, all of Middletown; five great-grandchildren and a beloved friend, Lois Bradley, formerly of Meriden and now of Largo FL. He was predeceased by a sister and two brothers, Frances Winkel Purcell, Norris Winkel and Wayne Winkel. The funeral will be held Monday at 9 a.m. at the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. The Rev. Perry L. Beaver and the Rev. Maureen Hawksley will officiate. Burial will be private in Center Cemetery in East Hartford. Relatives and friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
