Dr. George Magrath, 96, husband of the late Miriam Phipps Magrath, passed away on September 23, 2008 after a short illness. He was born in Whitinsville, MA on August 22, 1912 a son of the late George H. and Sarah Bassett Magrath. Dr. Magrath leaves his two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Willene Magrath of Georgia, and Douglas and Linda Magrath of Berlin, CT. His sister Ellen B. Magrath of Whitinsville, MA, eight grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his son George Magrath Jr., and three sisters, Edith Rankin, Helen R. Magrath, and Olive Burgoyne. Dr. Magrath had been the Superintendent of Meriden Schools for 19 years until his retirement in 1974. He was always very active in the Meriden community and is a Meriden Hall of Fame Member. George has always been sports oriented, and was an avid Red Sox Baseball and UCONN Basketball fan. For those who knew him, he will be truly missed. Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden is in charge of the private arrangements.   1. Doug and Linda, Our heartfelt sympathy is with you and your family. In my early childhood, I remember your dad as a .cuddly teddybear. up at Lake Waramaug. I’m glad that our families have reconnected in our adult lives. May good memories of your Dad fill your hearts.

I always had great respect and fondness for Mr. and Mrs. Magrath, as I knew them well growing up in the Magrath neighborhood in Meriden, including playing with their children, Rich, Brud (George Jr.), and Doug. One particular moment that I’ll always remember was Mr. Magrath, as Supt. of Schools, presenting me with my high school diploma and a faculty graduation award (1963). With deep condolences to Rich and Doug, and their families.
