Dr. Lewis C. Downing, age 84, of North Haven, CT passed away on February 24, 2016 at Connecticut Hospice in Branford after a long illness. He was born in Roanoke, Virginia on July 6, 1931 a son of the late Dr. Lylburn C. Downing and Helene King Downing. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Patricia Sandridge Downing; his daughter, Dr. Carol E. Downing & her husband Larry Weinstein of Virginia Beach, VA; his sons, Robert L. Downing & his wife Michele Kane of Hamden and Charles E. Downing & his wife Anne M. Downing of Vineyard Haven, MA; his grandchildren, Rachel Downing & Lee Weinstein; his sister-in-law, Jean P. Downing of Hamden; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Dr. Downing was predeceased by his sisters, Eloise Allen and Gloria Pope and his brother, Dr. Lylburn K. Downing. He was a graduate of Mount Hermon High School, Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, and Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. He started a private practice on Chapel Street fresh out of residency, then joined the Yale Health Plan full time in 1981.He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha and the Sigma Pi Phi Fraternities. In addition to his accomplishments, he was an avid tennis player and won many trophies over the years. Dr. Downing's Funeral Service and interment will be private. Arrangements are in care of BEECHER & BENNETT FUNERAL HOME, 2300 Whitney Ave, Hamden. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

  3. Dear Pat,

    We were so sad to read that Dr.Downing had died. He was such a nice man. We have some nice memories of him as our Doctor, and also at the picnics at the Fitzgeralds’. He always wore his picnic pants with the bugs on them.

    We will not forget him.

  4. Doc and I spent many an hour on the tennis court. He made me a better player than I ever thought I could be. I am sorry to hear of his passing and may he rest in peace.
