Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Parmelee Whalen passed away peacefully on Dec. 6, 2013 surrounded by family. Betty was born in New Haven, CT on April 4, 1933. Married Francis J. Whalen and raised her family in Hamden, CT. Betty was a parishioner at St. Rita Church where she was a proud member of the St. Rita Church Choir She was also a member of the WELI Choir and was a member when they produced their first album. Betty was an administrative assistant for the Guardian Insurance company for many years before her retirement. Betty was pre-deceased by her husband Francis J. Whalen and her parents Walter Parmelee and Catherine Coughlin Parmelee. She is survived by her children Beverly Whalen Davidson (Robert) of Glastonbury, Laura Whalen Wrinn (Michael) of Norwalk, Kathryn Whalen of Hamden, and Matthew Whalen (Candace) of Hamden. She is survived by 13 grandchildren Corey and Shaun Wrinn of Norwalk, Erika and Bethany and Rachel Potenziani of Hamden, Jake and Emily Whalen of Hamden, Ashley (Barry) Hughson of Boston, MA, Clayton and Randy Davidson of Ellington, and Sigourney, Alexis and Joseph Wheway of Hamden. She is also survived by her 3 great grandchildren Sofia Elizabeth Potenziani and Aila and Tyler Hughson of Boston, MA, former son in-law Harold Potenziani Jr and her beloved maltese Molly. Funeral from BEECHER & BENNETT FUNERAL HOME, 2300 Whitney Ave, Hamden on Tuesday, Dec, 10th at 9:00 AM followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Rita Church, Hamden, Friends may also visit with her family at the funeral home on Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Interment will take place in Pine Grove Cemetery, Ansonia. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to the Elizabeth Whalen Education Foundation at 144 Georgetown Dr. Glastonbury, CT 06033 or to All Saints Catholic School, 139 West Rocks Rd., Norwalk, CT 06851.

  1. Dear Beverly, Laura, Kathryn and Matt, so sorry to hear of Bettys passing. I am so fortunate to have had neighbors like Fran and Betty when I was only child. Always a safe place to be. I can only imagine how she must have felt around all those grand and great grand children. My thoughts will be with you.

I have alot of great memories of her as i was growing up. She was always so pleasant to be around. When i would come to the door to visit or collect money for the newspaper, she would always say; Scottys at the door! She was the first person to call me by that name and it still sticks with only the people in your family. When i run into someone from the family they always call me Scotty!
