Elizabeth “Betty” Curci (née Salerno), 103, of Hamden died after a brief illness at Yale-New Haven Hospital early Sunday morning. The widow of Alfred Curci, she is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Ann Gilbert of Hamden and Mary Grace Warner and her husband John of East Haven, as well as six grandchildren, Dr. Stacey Bonet and husband Alberto of East Haven, Christopher Gilbert and partner Odile Compton of Hamden, Janet Warner and partner Kirk Norton of East Haven, Petty Officer 2nd Class Jarred Gilbert and partner Treiu “Jenny” Thi Thao of Williamsburg, VA, Michelle Warner and partner Brian Farrell of Hamden, and Justin Warner and wife Stacy of Davenport, FL, and three great-grandchildren, Hayley Buba of Silver Springs, MD and Dolores Grace and Alberto Bonet. Born on December 21, 1919 to the late Donato Salerno and Maria Grazia Cerrone of Acerno, Italy, she was one of 14 children. Moving to Hamden in 1951, having previously worked for A.C. Gilbert and Sta-Brite, she helped run her husband’s plumbing and heating business while caring for their two children. She enjoyed bingo, and later the casinos and could be frequently found at her favorite slot machines. She also loved to cook for her little brother Charlie Salerno, her grandchildren, and her many nieces and nephews, including making her deviled eggs for niece Mary Ellen Collins (née Caliendo). Her eggplant parmigiana was also a high demand dish for all manners of family occasions. She leaves behind too many relatives and loved ones to mention, but the love she passed down from her mother will live for many generations to come. The family would like to thank the staff at YNHH for taking such good care of Betty in her final days. A remembrance service will be planned and held by the family at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks to please donate to your local food bank or soup kitchen, or give to Chef José Andrés World Central Kitchen.
