MERIDEN – Ernest (Ernie) Stewart Rule, 66, passed away peacefully October 12, 2021 with family by his side. He was born October 25, 1955 the son of Ernest and Eva (Lacombe) Rule. Having lived his whole life in Meriden, Ernie was very well known around town and was often seen walking to the library or to church. He was a lifetime member of the Salvation Army. In his younger years he attended services there, until recently when he started going to the Methodist Church. Ernie proudly worked 15 years at Stop & Shop before having to retire due to health concerns.
Ernie loved listening to “church music” and was always showing off his CD collection. He was an avid sports fan and loved cheering on the Giants and the Yankees (especially when they beat the Red Sox). Ernie loved to go bowling with his brother Artie, and the Special Olympic League. He was part of the National Special Olympic League, where he won several medals and once proudly carried the flag.
Ernie loved to do crafts of any kind and he was especially known for his beads/necklaces. He loved to share his crafts with everyone, especially the doctors and nurses at the infusion clinic. Ernie was making necklaces for his favorite nurses at MidState just days before his passed. Ernie was very caring and genuine, and his honesty and innocence will be missed.
Ernie is predeceased by his parents Ernest and Eva Rule, his brother Robert “Bobby” Rule, and his brother Charles “Artie” Rule. He is survived by his sisters; Eva Sands and her husband Donald of Meriden, Mary Ann Gerry of Unity, ME, and Sarah Rule of Meriden, as well as several nieces and nephews with whom he shared a very special bond. Ernie would not have been able to independently live the life he did without the care of many from RMS.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of his Life on his birthday, Monday, October 25 from 9-11 AM at Beecher & Bennett-Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. Interment in Walnut Grove Cemetery.

  1. Sarah and Family,
I’m so sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of knowing and coaching Ernie for many years with Tri-Town Special Olympics. He was a very kind soul.

  2. I was very fortunate to have met Ernie on my several trips to Stop & Shop & being a fellow Yankees fan, the obove noted about his cheering against the team from Boston was fitting. I do recall one occasion when I was placing my shopping bags in the trunk of my car I had the Yankee/ Red Sox game playing on the radio & we were on the winning end of a “walk off Home Run” and the emotion that he showed at that moment of hearing the call made everyone in earshot turn to look & all those who were passing by who knew Ernie knew that it must have been a Yankees win… That was the last time I saw Ernie & it was an amazing last encounter… Rest in Peace Ernie & maybe you can guide them to a better outcome next season from above
