Born in: New Haven, CT
Resided in: Bethany, CT

Frederick M. “Fred” Scalese, Jr, age 77, of Bethany, passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife by his side on December 1, 2021. Born in New Haven on August 22, 1944, he was the son of the late Frederick M. Scalese, Sr. and Frances (DeMaio) Scalese.
Fred is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann (Smith) Scalese, who was his constant caregiver and greatest love. He is also survived by a daughter, Sally McGee (Ken) of Stamford, and two grandchildren, Connor James McGee and Eaden Rose McGee. Fred also leaves behind Clancy, his beloved yellow Labrador Retriever. In addition, he is survived by his sister, Roseann Roetting (Dave), and nephews, Karl Roetting (Dawn) and David Roetting, Jr.
A career-long educator, Fred taught all types of students over the years, including special needs, gifted and talented, and finally ending his career at the Bridgeport Regional Vocational Aquaculture School. While at the Aquaculture School, Fred obtained his Captain’s License, which allowed him to share his love of fishing and never-ending knowledge of marine science with his students. Fred always felt so blessed whenever a former student returned after completing college or a doctorate program and thanked him for the difference he made and impact he had on their lives. Fred had a tremendous gift for making anyone feel welcome in his home. His love of gardening produced a bountiful harvest every year that he generously shared with friends and family. Those lucky enough to receive a dinner invitation left with a full belly and a “goody bag” with leftovers and more fresh garden produce. Fred truly loved being on the water. Opening Day of fishing season was his favorite “holiday.” Every year before his illness prevented him from doing so, he would be out on Long Island Sound with his lifelong friends, Pat Lavorante and Joe Macolino. Joe preceded him in death only a few short months ago. The family wishes to thank Vitas Hospice for providing such kind and compassionate care for Fred over the course of his illness. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Vitas Hospice, 199 Park Rd. Ext., Middlebury, CT 06762.
Friends may visit with his family on Tuesday, December 7th, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to his Prayer Service, which will begin at 11:00 a.m. at BEECHER & BENNETT FUNERAL HOME, 2300 Whitney Ave, Hamden.

  1. Dear Pat and family,
I was very sorry to learn of Fred’s passing. He shared my father’s name, cousin “Fred” Scalese (Alfred P. of Orange and love of gardening and cooking. It must run in the family! Although we didn’t have many occasions to see each other over the years, I know he was a very dedicated teacher for his entire career, a terrific husband and dad, and a genuine force for good in the world.
He will be missed by many.
    Sending sincere condolences,
    Bonnie (Scalese) Coppola
