April 4, 1950 ~ May 14, 2023

Born in: White Plains, NY
Resided in: New Haven, CT

Gene S. Winter, adoring husband, devoted father and grandfather, cherished friend, and consummate professional, died suddenly on Sunday, May 14th at the age of 73, following a weekend spent with family and friends doing the things he loved most. Predeceased by his parents Sidney and Mary Winter, Gene leaves his devoted wife Nancy of 47 years, his son Matthew and his girlfriend Victoria, and his son Jonathan and his wife Rebecca and their three children Sam, Sophie, and Charlie. In addition, he is survived by his brother Bruce Winter and sister Audrey Winter.

An active member of the New Haven community that he treasured, Gene was a member of the Boards of the Eli Whitney Museum, Cancer Care, and the New Haven Lawn Club where he enjoyed time in the pool, on the tennis courts, and in the dining room, always surrounded by friends and family.  He was passionate about Paris, Salsa dancing, fine wines, gourmet food, and politics. Gene reveled in sharing his travels with Nancy to exotic destinations where cultural expeditions were at the core. His treasured corner of the world is a small hamlet on the island of Virgin Gorda known as Guavaberry Spring Bay where he traveled every year with his family for over 40 years. Gene will forever have a place under the tamarind tree at Spring Bay, watching the magical sunsets and remembering time with friends and watching his children and grandchildren grow. Foremost was the enjoyment he felt attending his children’s sports games and playing his special game of “babycises” with his beloved grandchildren. Gene’s legacies abound, but those who knew and so loved him honor his passion for always living life to its fullest.

With degrees in Systems Engineering from UCLA (Summa Cum Laude: 1972) and Cornell Law School (1975), Gene was a Managing Partner of a prominent Stamford based law firm, St. Onge Steward Johnston & Reens, LLC, where he specialized in intellectual property, and trademark and patent law. Gene managed patent and trademark portfolios for clients from individual inventors and small businesses to large international patent and trademark portfolios for publicly traded companies. Gene was also a seasoned trial attorney, defending against patent assertion entities, obtaining multi-million dollar jury verdicts and successfully arguing appeals in the Federal, Second and Ninth Circuits. Recognized for his acumen, adroit legal expertise, and as an exemplary legal and business strategist, Gene was past President of the Connecticut Patent Law Association.

Later in his life, Gene and his family started a theater production around Woof Woof, a character which Gene and Nancy helped create many years ago with their two sons. Gene would project a hand shadow puppet on the ceiling at bedtime and young Matthew and Jonathan would talk to Woof Woof, sharing all their excitements, fears and worries, knowing Dad was always listening and always loved them.

  1. Nothing I can say will ease your pain, but I am forever sorry for losing someone so special…..happy to have shared 30 of Gene’s 40 years here at Guavaberry Spring Bay 🌴❤️🌴

  2. Nancy, Jon, Matthew, Becca-this is the saddest news…Gene was a special man with a big heart and
Kind ways…loved by his family and friends. I will hold memories of all the good times in New Haven, Florida. Jamaica and Paris…deepest sympathy and love.💕

  3. Our hearts go out to Gene’s family and all of my family share moments of joy and friendship with Gene, Nancy, Johnathan and Mathew, particularly when I could pick up both boys. Now they can pick me up! Nancy, you have, at critical moments, helped my family and I will always hold you in a special space. Gene’s caring and ebullient outlook was always evident and his pride and support of his family was telling and heartwarming.

  4. I loved talking with Gene about life during our pilates sessions. He was a wonderful man who I will remember so fondly!

  5. A brilliant legal mind, with a heart of gold , Gene was a great mentor and good friend. I met Gene when I first started practicing law in Connecticut some 33 years ago. His advice and encouragement were always appreciated and spot on. I trusted no one more with my clients’ IP concerns than Gene and his son Jon. From his humble teddy bear charm to his pragmatic solutions always supported by depth of knowledge, Gene was one of a kind. I will miss him very much and I am so sad that I did not take the time to personally tell him these things while he was here. My condolences, love, and prayers to the entire Winter family

  6. So sorry to hear of this. Gene and I worked together on several patent cases, and his counsel, friendship, and support were always greatly appreciated. My condolences to his family and friends.

  7. So sorry to hear of Gene’s passing. It has always been a pleasure and honour to work with him for what is quite a few decades now. My condolences to his family and friends.

  9. So sorry to hear about sudden passing of Gene Winter. May his soul Rest in Peace and pray to God to give strength to his family and entire SSJR Team!

  10. After working with Gene and SSJR for over 30 years, I finally met him at last year’s Taco Social in Stamford. I am so glad that I attended – he was as interesting, dynamic and welcoming as I had
thought he would be, and it was more like meeting an old friend.

    Please accept our sincere condolences,
Joanne M. Marino and the HOMA Pump Technology team

  11. This is just the saddest. Gene was one of my favorite people. Kind, giving, happy, a good friend, and genuinely wonderful human being. I’ll always remember Paris, Italy, Virgen Gorda and our laughs during all those Salsa lessons. He will be missed. Nancy, Matt, Jon, Becca, I am truly sorry… sending you all much love, y un abrazo fuerte.

  13. We were devastated to hear of Gene’s sudden passing, but were deeply gratified that he had spent a beautiful Mother’s Day by Nancy’s and his sons’ sides. Gene was such a wonderful, warm, and kind presence in all of our lives, and we loved seeing him at the LC every summer. We will all miss him so much. Much love and our prayers to all the Winters/Closes. Elif, Bill, & Mea.

  14. So sorry about Gene’s passing. Our last meeting was still in my mind. My sincere condolences to all the family from Shanghai.

  15. I was completely surprised to hear of Gene’s sudden passing. I have him to thank for his encouragement for my new CST business venture. He and Jonathan provided the legal assistance that we needed and more importantly he saw the business potential in what we were embarking upon. Most importantly, he did all of this with intelligence, wisdom, and humility. This is a rare combination among business leaders and will ensure that he will long be remembered and his memory cherished. I will miss my discussions with Gene. May he Rest In Peace and may his family find comfort in knowing that he was a truly good man.
    – John Vester
