Gordon Maurice Payne, 95, of 119 Treadwell St., Hamden, husband of the late Mary Payne, passed away on March 5, 2007 surrounded by his family. He was born in Hamden, on Treadwell St., to the late Herbert and Elsie Zorn Payne on January 26, 1912. Gordon grew up in Hamden and graduated from Yale University in 1934. In 1941 he joined the US Army where he spent the next five years as a Finance Officer. He married the love of his life in 1942 and the two were able to share 64 wonderful years together. Gordon enjoyed the time he spent coaching softball for Hamden Rec., and quality time spent at their cottage on Quaddick Lake, where he was a familiar figure sailing with his dog. Gordon leaves his daughter, Susan Dumas and her husband Gene of Thompson, CT, a son, Mark Payne, four grandchildren, Bryan Boppert, Adam Boppert, Emily Payne, Andrew Payne and family friend and caregiver, Gayle Bisson. He was predeceased by a brother George B. Payne. Funeral Service Saturday, March 10, at 11 a.m. at BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden. Friends may call Sat., from 10-11 a.m. Interment in Grove Street Cemetery, New Haven. Memorial contributions in Gordon's name can be sent to Stonington Education Fund, P.O. Box 1922, Pawcatuck, CT 06379.
