Hazel Hoppe, 89, formerly of Southington and Bethany, passed away Saturday October 18, 2008 at the Shaddy Knoll Convalsent Home, Seymour after a long illness. She was the widow of William Frederic Hoppe.Sr. Mrs Hoppe was born in New Haven on November 1, 1918 , to Elford and Nellie Downs Lounsbury. She was a long time member of the First Church of Christ, in Bethany and a member of the Bethany Historical Society. Hazel was the author of books namely, Bethany Yesterday, The One Room School and Bethany Pebbles and Flowers.She is survived by daughters, Nancy Hoppe of Waterbury, Judith Bemis of Winter Park, Fl. and Patricia Scott of Bethany, a son William F. Hoppe Jr. of Prospect Also survived by 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by sisters, Florence (Peggy) Johnson, Minnie Downs, Helen Cooper and Dorothy Hackett. Funeral Service will be held at the First Church of Christ Congregational, 511 Amity Rd., Bethany, Tuesday Oct. 21, 2008 at 11am. Interment will be in First Church Burying Grounds, Bethany. Friends may call Monday from 5-8pm at BEECHER & BENNET, Funeral Home, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden. Contributions in memory of Hazel may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, South Central CT.
