Helen Polek Onofrio, 98, of Hamden, beloved wife of the late Dominick Onofrio, passed away December 7, 2013 peacefully with her family by her side. Loving mother of Roberta Stoor, Ret. Sgt. NoHPD Robert (Martha) Onofrio, Deputy Chief HPD William (Lori) Onofrio, and James Onofrio, all of Hamden; stepmother of Pat, Louis and Anthony Onofrio. Grandmother of Officer HPD Ed Stoor, Cheryl Onofrio, Army Sgt. James S. Onofrio, Kristin Onofrio, Detective HPD William Onofrio, Jr., Firefighter HFD Michael Onofrio, beloved great-grandmother of Alexis, Zachary, Elias, Anthony, Isabella, Carson, and Wyatt. She is also survived by her sister Mary Andreucci of Madison, CT. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a sister, Wanda 'Jenny' Paolillo, 6 brothers, Frank, Walter, Henry, Louis, Stephen, and John Polek, and a son-in-law, Ed Stoor. Helen was born in New Haven Jan. 1, 1916, a daughter of the late Steven and Julia Wronski Polek and resided in Hamden since 1955. Earlier she was employed at 5 Cent Charlie's Restaurant in New Haven and then at Winchester Repeating Arms Co. She attended St. Rita Church, enjoyed gardening, and was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, living by the motto 'Family First.' After the death of her husband Dominick, she continued his activities with the D.A.V. Helen's family would like to thank the caring staff at Hamden Healthcare, and the Hamden Fire Department. Funeral from BEECHER & BENNETT FUNERAL HOME, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden Wednesday morning, Dec. 11, at 9:30. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Rita Church at 10 am. Interment in St. Lawrence Cemetery.
