Helene M. Shincel
Hamden- Helene M. Shincel, 97, of 200 Leeder Hill Dr. died Tuesday July 3, 2001 after a brief illness. She was a former school psychologist at New Haven's Hillhouse High School. After teaching high school in Derby and New Haven for 24 years, Miss Shincel became school psychologist at Hillhouse High School in 1954. During the 18 years she served in that position, she successfully encouraged many students to live up to their potential, and helped their familes to support the students academic and career goals. Born in Philadelphia, on May 13, 1904, Miss Shincel was the daughter of the late Herman E. and Clara (Geiser) Shincel. She grew up in Waterbury, CT., where she was women's tennis champion in 1924. She graduated from Smith College with a B. A, degree in 1925, and was subsequently awarded an M. A. in psychology from Yale University and a 6th year professional degree from the University of Connecticut. During WW II she served as a member of the Red Cross Motor Corps. Miss Shincel was a founder of the New Haven Federation of Teachers, and a member of the Connecticut Associations of School Psychologists. Her other memberships included the American Association of University Women, the League of Women Voters, the Woodbridge Garden Club, and the New Haven Bird Club. She is survived by her nieces, Elizabeth Shincel Willard, of Wayland, MA., Linda Shincel Kauffman, of Deep River , CT., and Judith Shincel Hanf, of Guilford, CT. A Service of Rememberance will be held Tuesday July 10, at 11 AM at the Whitney Center, 6th floor Commons, 200 Leeder Hill Dr. Hamden.
