Herbert M. Atherton

Herbert M. Atherton, the dean of Yale's Ezra Stiles residential college, 1973-1982, died on May 12, 2011 in Branford, CT of cancer-related causes. Dr. Atherton took his doctorate in history at Yale and served on the history faculty 1967-1982. His career included service as staff director and director of educational programs for the National Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution, 1987-1992. In more recent years he worked in the areas of constitutional history and civic education, both is this country and overseas. Dr. Atherton is survived by: his wife, Caroline Y. Atherton; two children, Victoria A.Logsdon and H. James Atherton; two grandchildren, William M. Logsdon and Elizabeth C. Logsdon; and a sister, Terry C. Atherton of St. Louis, MO. A private, family service was held at the Grove Street Cemetery, New Haven, CT. BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave, Hamden, in care of arrangments.
