Herbert Petersen Lovig, 99, of St. Charles, MO passed away on August 1, 2012. Born in Hamden on June 14, 1913 to the late Christen and Marie Lauritsen Lovig. He grew up in Hamden, and graduated from Hillhouse High School in 1931. He lived in North Haven for 44 years before moving to Elim Park in Cheshire where he resided for 13 years. Since 2002, he lived in St. Charles, MO. Herbert was married for 35 years to Grace Varigallo who died in 1987. He then married Jenny Knudsen Bensen who passed away in 1998. Herbert was honorably discharged from the US Army as a Staff Sergeant in 1946. After his time in the service, he was employed by Toledo Scale Company for 31 years until his retirement in 1978. He was a member of the American Legion Post 123 in Rocky Hill. Herbert is survived by three stepchildren, Ruth Bensen Ekberg and her husband Glen of Rockford, IL, Frank Whitie Bensen of West Haven, Dorothy Bensen Rasche and her husband Bob of Chesterfield, MO; eight step-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wives, Herbert was predeceased by nine siblings. A Funeral Service will take place on Wednesday, August 8th at BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave, Hamden, at 10:00 a.m. Friends may visit with Herbert's family earlier in the morning from 9:00 to 10:00. Interment with Military Honors to follow in Hamden Plains Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Heartland Hospice Memorial Fund, 1097 Wentzville Parkway, Wentzville, MO 63385. First from his visit in Denmark together with his wife Jenny, and next from the times we met him in the States.We speciel think on the morning after the wedding in Clemson, when he came to talk with us in the beautiful garden, before we went to the breakfast.
