Hugh Townsend Sutherland passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at Masonicare in Wallingford, CT. Hugh was born in New Haven, CT on April 26, 1949 to Stanley & Florinelle ('Pidge') Doermer Sutherland. Hugh grew up in North Haven and attended North Haven public schools. Hugh was a master craftsman. His longtime career was renovating houses. Hugh was fortunate to have two terrific partners in his life; Melissa Winton, who predeceased him, and Sandra J. Green of Hamden. Also survived by his brother James S. Sutherland and his wife Marilyn of Clay, NY; nieces, Debbie Boddie, Rachael Kemlage, and Kaitlin Raccio; Melissa's daughter Leslie Slater and her children, Morgan and Chloe, whom he loved dearly, his step-children Corey A. Green, Scott A. Green, and Tracey Green Trowbridge, and his lifelong friend Dana Bjonberg of Woodbury. Hugh was predeceased by his sister Carol Jean Sutherland Raccio and both parents. He was a longtime member of Grace & St. Peter's Church. Hugh will be greatly missed. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 26th at 11:30 a.m. in Grace & St. Peter's Church. Arrangements in care of BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave, Hamden. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Hugh's memory may be sent to Grace & St. Peter's Church, 2925 Dixwell Ave, Hamden, CT 06518.

  1. Dear Family, I am so sorry to read about the death of Hugh today. James and Hugh were my friends and neighbors when we all lived on Russell Road in North Haven. James and I were classmates at North Haven High School and Hugh was two years behind us. Please take care. Doug Golden

  2. I grew up with the Sutherland family when they lived on clintonville road in North Haven! Jimmy was my best friend and Hugh was his younger brother. I have nothing but fond memories of Jimmy and his whole family! Jimmy and Hugh and their little sister were great kids and a blast to be around! It was a sad day when they moved out of our neighborhood! Jimmy I am very sad to hear of your lose, my thoughts and prayers are with you!

  3. Its hard to believe my best friend has moved on.I feel like part of my life is gone,but i have all the Love & Memories of our wonderful friendship.We first met in kindergarten.We shared many adventures together!! He will forever be in my memories.

  4. Today I attended Hughs memorial service. I hadnt seen Hugh in many years but I remember him as a wonderful happy go lucky man with the clearest blue eyes. Dana and I had some adventures with Hugh.Knowing that Hugh was a believer in Jesus Christ and is at home in heaven is a comfort. See you at the banquet my friend.

  5. We have not been in touch with Hugh in several years and just found out about his passing. We are very sorry. He was a great craftsman and a very sincere and caring individual, and we enjoyed knowing him.
