Jane E. Monteith, 91, of Evergreen Woods Health Center, North Branford, passed away on January 9, 2024. She was the wife of the late Walter H. Monteith, Jr. She is survived by her three daughters, Deborah Monteith Neubert (Michael) of North Haven, Diane M. Marino (Michael) of Pawley’s Island, SC, and Karen M. Flynn (Charles) of Madison; four grandchildren; Kimberly K. Neubert (Lukas Matarazzo), Michael M. Neubert, Matthew W. Flynn (Shannon Moser) and Christopher D. Flynn; one sister, Elaine M. Henneberry, of Bradenton, FL, and several nieces and nephews. She was born April 21, 1932, in Springfield, MA, one of four children of the late Seraphin and Irene Dennis Marceau. She graduated from the Cathedral School in Springfield, and received her B.A. from American International College in Springfield. During college, she met an earnest Amherst College student, Walter “Scotty” Monteith, while they both worked summers on the Cape. They were married when she was 22, and although she taught school briefly after college, her life’s work was her family, including supporting Scotty’s career and raising their daughters. While Scotty was CEO of SNET, he often referred to Jane as his CEO, in charge of the innumerable responsibilities of raising a family and juggling a full business and social calendar. During Scotty’s long career at SNET, they made six different places in Connecticut their home, from the mid-fifties to the early 70’s, including North Branford and Watertown. Their last stop was North Haven, where they lived happily and made many friends. During the 80’s and 90’s, Jane did charitable work she truly loved, including joining the Board of the Children’s Center in Hamden, and helping to found Symphony Selections, a consignment shop benefitting the New Haven Symphony. For many years, she helped with, and was later helped by, her four grandchildren, with whom she became very close, and of whom she was very proud. In addition to her family and friends, one of her greatest joys was her cottage on Martha’s Vineyard, where she spent many happy times. She will be remembered for her love of laughter, fun, and enduring friendships. The family wishes to thank the staff of Evergreen Woods Health Center for the loving care she received there the last few years of her life.

  1. Dear Deb,

I’m so sorry for your loss, but your mother could not have gotten better care through you and your sisters. She’d be so proud and excited by your continued love of the Vineyard. I hope you take comfort in knowing that she was well care for and loved, and appreciated by those related to her, but those who knew her from the community.

    • Thank you Mary Jane, she loved the New Haven community, and friendships like yours were important to her. We will remember “Jane’s House” and her love of the Vineyard fondly.

  2. I was so sorry to read of the passing of your Mother. I got to know your parents when I worked with them to find their new home when they moved from Watertown to North Haven. It was a pleasure to know them. Please accept my sincere condolences.

    • Thank you for your condolences, Joe, I remember that move like it was yesterday! They were very happy there.

  3. Deborah, Karen, Diane & family-
Thank you for sharing Jane with us at EWHC. She made coming to work fun; the stories, memories and laughter she shared with us will not be forgotten. She spoke so highly of her girls; she was proud of you all. I won’t forget those happy feet dancing to music, her love for chocolate, sunshine, outdoors, & warmth. May her memory be eternal. My deepest condolences.

  4. Deb, My sincere condolences on the loss of your mother. Wishing you and your family comfort, peace and memories of all of the joyful times.
