Joe Louis Spikes, Sr. was born June 24, 1938, in Miami, Florida to the late Alex and Minnie (Bivins) Spikes. Joe was called from service to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 28, 2023, at Midstate Medical Center in Meriden, Connecticut.
Joe had two brothers, Ernest Spikes and Aaron Spikes, Sr. After accepting Christ as his personal savior, Joe lived a life committed to God.
Joe met and married the love of his life, his “Everything,” Brenda Spikes on November 11, 1961. To this union were born four beautiful children; two daughters, Yvonne and Minnette, and two sons, Joe Jr. and Courtney.
Joe’s military career began at the age of 20. He joined the United States Air Force December 4, 1958. He was stationed at Westover Air Force Base, as a Morse Code Operator. Joe was honorably discharged on May 17, 1962. Upon discharge from the military, he went on to work as a machinist for Waterbury Farrel for many years until his retirement.
Joe was a faithful Deacon at Bibleway Church in Middletown, Connecticut for over 20 years. He was a fan and loved all sorts of sports, baseball, football, basketball-you name it, he loved it!
Joe lived a life full of love, laughter, and plenty of enjoyment. He will be truly missed, but never forgotten.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Minnie Spikes, and son, Joe Spikes, Jr. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Brenda, two daughters, Yvonne Taylor and Minnette (Sherman) Powell, one son, Courtney Spikes, his grandchildren, Jamie (Dorian) King, Ninnette (Jermaine) Johnson, Jamelle Spikes, Isabella (Bernard) Osborne, Chad and Marley Spikes, eight great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
A funeral service celebrating Joe’s life will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 9:30 a.m. in the Apostolic Community Church, 146 Center St., Meriden, CT 06450, with visitation from 9:00-9:30 a.m. before the service. Interment will be held on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. in the CT State Veterans Cemetery, 317 Bow Ln., Middletown, CT 06457.

  6. It was joy to know and be in ministry service with Deacon Spikes for the many years that I lived in Hartford and was associated with the New England Diocese. It’s been years , decades since I’ve departed from CT, but throughout our years there and in frequent times of fellowship, it was always true joy, love, and fellowship that kept us in communion. My prayers are with Brenda and the entire family as you go through this time of loss and heartache. May the God of all grace and peace hold you now.
