John F. Burke
Hamden - John F.Burke, 91 of McDermott Circle, husband of Sylvia Salvadori Burke passed away Thurs., Sept. 30 at his home. He was born May 27, 1913 in Newry, Northern Ireland a son of the late James and Mary McKevitt Burke. John earned his undergraduate degrees from the National University in Ireland and his PhD in Experimental Psychology from the University of Luvain in Belgium. He was chairman of the Psychology Department at Southern Connecticut State University for many years, retiring in 1983. While at Southern he served on the faculty senate and the presidential search committee. He previously taught in Ireland, Italy, India and at St. Bonaventure University. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and after his retirement he was a member of the Mt. Carmel Art Association. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Linda and her husband, Paul Latino of Holden, MA, one son, Andrew Burke and his wife, Maureen Gardner of New Haven, a brother, William and his wife, Margaret Burke of Newry, Ireland, grandchildren, Paul Latino III, Angela Latino and Rachel Burke as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Patrick, James and Thomas Burke, and four sisters; Mary McConville, Sally Liebert, Christine O'Hare and Susan Burke. Funeral from BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden, Mon., Oct. 4 at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will follow at All Saints Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call Sun. from 5-7 p.m.
