JOHN J. McHUGH North Haven - John Joseph McHugh, 82, loving husband of Joan Lewkowicz McHugh of Bayard Ave. passed away Jan. 15, 2006 in Yale New Haven Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Amesbury, MA, Dec. 24, 1923 a son of the late John and Catherine Kearrney McHugh and resided in North Haven since 1978. He graduated from American International College, Springfield, MA in 1950. During WW II he served in the US Army, 296th Engineer Combat Battalion as a corporal in the European Theater of Operations (E.T.O.). He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, with the occupation Army in Berlin, Germany, and earned 5 Battle Stars. Mr. McHugh was a Bank Officer at the First Bank of New Haven for many years prior to retirement, and a member of the New Haven Irish Club. John will be remembered as being devoted to his family and friends. In addition to his wife he is survived by 2 stepchildren, Nancy (Gary) Smith of Stratford, CT, Robert Oesau of Seymour, CT, a sister, Isabelle M. Leen of MA, 2 brothers, Paul McHugh of WI, Frank K. McHugh of FL, 5 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson, and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Peg Kroll and Kathleen McHugh. Funeral from BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden, Sat., Jan. 21 at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10 a.m. Friends may call Fri. from 5-8 p.m. Interment with Military Honors in All Saints Cemetery. Contributions in his memory may be sent to American International College, Alumni Varsity Club Scholarship Fund, 1000 State St., Springfield, MA 01109.
