Meriden- Joseph T. Higgins, 78, of Eastern St. New Haven passed away Sept. 5, 2004 in MidState Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in New Haven, Aug. 1, 1926 a son of the late Timothy F. and Ruth Horton Higgins and had resided in Meriden before recently moving to New Haven. Joseph served with the US Army during WW II on the Island of Saipan for 16 months and attained the rank of Master Sergeant. He graduated from Quinnipiac University with an Associates Degree in accounting and was employed by US Steel for 12 years and later for Gulf Oil Corp for 20 years. He was an avid duckpin bowler and won many tournaments over the years, he also won the Championship in horseshoes in New Haven in 2000 at the age of 74. He leaves behind two daughters, Sharon Howland of Kennebunk, ME and Doreen Steben of Old Orchard Beach, ME. He will be deeply missed by his loving grandchildren, Lindsay, Ian, Matthew and Jaime. He is also survived by nieces, Kathy and Christine and a nephew, David. He was predeceased by his wife, Jeanne Curren Higgins in 1998 and by brothers, Francis, Raymond and Robert. Friends may call Friday Sept 10 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at BEECHER & BENNETT-FLATOW FUNERAL HOME, 48 Cook Ave. Meriden. Funeral prayers will be offered by Rev. Isaac Calicchio at 7 p.m. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 45 Ash St., East Hartford, CT 06108.
