JOSEPHINE McNERNEY Josephine McNerney, 86, wife of Thomas A. McNerney for 61 years, of 125 Putnam Ave, Hamden died August 14, 2002. She was born in Bridgeport, CT, Aug. 10, 1916 a daughter of the late Frederic C. and Isabelle Hoyt Bennetto and had resided in Hamden for most of her life. Josephine's paternal grandparents emigrated from the town of Pool in Cornwall, England to the U.S. in the early 1800's. Her maternal grandparents, the Hoyts were among the early settlers of Danbury, CT. She attended New Haven St. Teacher's College and graduated from Larson Jr. College as a medical secretary. She worked as a secretary in the medical field and was later employed by Nationwide Insurance Co., retiring in 1977. Mrs. McNerney was a former member of the Sleeping Giant Women's Golf League, the Edgewood Club, the Parent's Assoc. of Sacred Heart Academy and the Nationwide Senior Associates. Later in her life, she thoroughly enjoyed being a leader in the Girl's Friendly Society at Grace and St. Peter's Episcopal Church where she also was a member of the Episcopal Church women. In addition to her husband, Thomas, she is survived by three children, Barbara Grosser of Somers, CT, Susan McNerney of Branford, CT and John Thomas McNerney of Land O'Lakes, FL, four grandchildren, Karla & Todd Grosser and Jennifer & Justin McNerney. She was predeceased by a son James Edward McNerney and a brother Frederic C. Bennetto, Jr. Funeral service will be held Saturday, August 17 at 10 a.m. at Grace & St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 2927 Dixwell Ave., Hamden. Friends may call Friday from 4-7 p.m. at BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden. Burial in St. Lawrence Cemetery.
