Madelyn Overlock Oertel, 97, wife of the late Lester Overlock, Sr. and Judson Oertel, passed away on February 13, 2024 at Autumn Lake Healthcare at The Willows in Woodbridge, CT. Born in Waterville, ME on September 11, 1926 to the late Edras and Wilhelmina Pleau Williams.
She will be lovingly remembered by her son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Elisa Overlock; grandchildren, Lissa (Paul) Rustic, Jennifer (Adam) Amato, Kim (Brett) Towle, Daniel Overlock and fiancee Devon Welstead, Salvatore, Steven, and Michelle Raucci; great-grandchildren, Kristopher Rustic, Julianna Raucci, Easton Bennett, Dominic and Harper Raucci, and Whitney and Hayden Towle; and daughter-in-law Lauren Overlock. Predeceased by her son, Lester Overlock, Jr., grandson, Kirk Overlock, sister, Stella Roberts, and twin sister, Geraldine Williams.
Madelyn was on the New Haven Police Department for a number of years, having held two different positions: Police Matron, attending to women detainees, and she also served the community as a school crossing guard.
She was a staunch Democratic supporter and very active in the Westville section of New Haven. Madelyn would hold rallies over her 50+ years of living in Westville supporting the Democratic candidates for Mayor, and local and state legislators, earning her the nickname “Mayor of Westville.”
Friends are invited to visit with her family on Friday, February 16th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at BEECHER & BENNETT FUNERAL HOME, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church at 12:00 p.m., followed by burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Mrs. Overlock was the school crossing guard when I went to Davis Street School back in the fifties. She was a kind and caring individual who always interacted with us.
I remember inviting her to lunch at my house and she came!! I was thrilled.
