Born in: Wheeling, WV
Resided in: Hamden, CT

Madelyn Shia George, 92, wife of the late Edward T. George, Ph.D for 52 years, passed away October 7, 2023 after a brief illness. She was born in Wheeling, West Virginia on March 18, 1931, a daughter of the late S.A. and Mary Joseph Shia, and resided in Hamden since 1961. Madelyn was employed as an administrator in the Yale University Program on Aging Department. She was a communicant of St. Rita Church, served on the Parish Council and was President of the Ladies Guild.

Madelyn loved music, loved to dance, and was nicknamed “Gunner” as a youth due to her shooting style as a basketball player in her native Wheeling. She was an avid reader and bridge player, growing up playing bridge with her siblings early on, and later in life with her friends. She loved watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune every evening.

Madelyn took great pride in her children and grandchildren, and loved her annual trips to Pittsfield, Massachusetts and Austin, Texas to see her many relatives, and to the beach with Eddie, who referred to her as “one tough cookie.”

She is survived by four sons and their spouses: Thomas George and Christine, Stephen George, Gary George and Susan, all of Hamden, and Christopher George and Marci of Sunnyside, NY, and nine grandchildren: Kurt, Scott and Dana George, Paul and Erik George, Anthony Teague, Noah, Lilah, and Henry George. She was predeceased by sisters Paula Hundley, Nettie Hague, and Mildred Joseph, and brother Dr. George Shia.

We are grateful to the staffs at Atria Larson Place and Meadow Mills, both in Hamden, that cared for Madelyn in recent years.

Graveside Prayer Service will be held Tuesday, October 10th at 1:00 PM in All Saints Cemetery, 700 Middletown Ave. North Haven. Please meet at the cemetery office at 12:45 PM. Arrangements in care of BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden.

Contributions in her memory may be sent to Kiwanis Club, <https://www.kiwanis.org/who-we-are/kiwanis-childrens-fund/ways-to-give/donation-form/>.

  1. I remember the many, many Thanksgivings the Barone family shared with the Georges, whether on Russell St. or Edgemere Ave. She was always nice to me and a wonderful person to be around. I’m sorry for your loss.
