Mary Gail (Scanlon) Mongillo, 89, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2025. Born in Meriden, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary (Coleman) Scanlon. Mary Gail attended Laurelton Hall Academy in Milford and received a BA degree from Albertus Magnus College and a Master of Library Science degree from Southern Connecticut State University. She was active in the Catholic faith and, most recently, was a parishioner of Saint Bridget of Sweden Church in Cheshire. She was a long-time member of the Catholic Charity League.
Mary Gail was a devoted and supportive wife and mother. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Stephen. Mary Gail lovingly raised her four children, Mary Ellen (George) Selby, Stephen (Elisabeth) Mongillo, Anne (Colin) McRavey, and James (Barbara) Mongillo. She adored each of her nine grandchildren, Caroline, Allison (Joseph) Mascaro, Julia (Josh) Selby, Elizabeth, Katherine, Olivia, Callum, William, and Andrew. She was thrilled to welcome a great-grandson, Joseph, last year. She is also survived by her brother, James Scanlon, and his family. She was predeceased by her infant son, John James, her sister, Dorothy, and her son-in-law, Colin McRavey.
Mary Gail was an avid reader and co-founded an active book club. She was intelligent and witty, and she instilled a love of reading in her children and grandchildren. She was a librarian and substitute teacher for many years. She was a long-time member of New Haven Country Club and enjoyed golfing and socializing with her many friends there. For years, she was a leader of the Ladies Tuesday Golf League. Mary Gail was proud of her Irish heritage, and she and her husband traveled extensively through Europe and the US. They also shared many wonderful memories on Cape Cod, such as when she made a hole in one.
Among her many friends and family, Mary Gail will be most remembered for her kindness.
