Mary M. 'Mardy' Johnsen, 88, of 21 Bradley Rd., Woodbridge, died Oct. 6, 2011. She was predeceased by her husband, Paul J. Johnsen, and son, David D. Johnsen. Survivors include a son Donald R. Johnsen of Grafton, New Hampshire, a daughter, Carol L. Johnsen of Pahoa, Hawaii, a sister, Nancy Bell of Carlsbad, California, and two grandchildren, Riley D. Johnsen and Perry M. Johnsen. Mardy was born in New Haven on Oct. 27, 1922 to Richard D. and Margaret M. Jack. She attended the Edgewood School during her early years and then went on to Hillhouse High School where she met her future husband of sixty years. In 1942, Mardy graduated from what was then Colby Junior College in New London, New Hampshire. On February 24, 1945, she married Paul Johnsen of Orange, CT just before he reported for active duty as an officer aboard a U.S. Navy destroyer headed for the Pacific. At the conclusion of World War II and during the ensuing years, the family lived in several communities throughout Connecticut. After raising their three children, Mardy and Paul eventually retired to North Haven. Affectionately called 'Punk' by her father and husband, Mardy was active in a number of civic organizations. She was a partner with Hello New Haven, a welcoming organization for new residents to the Greater New Haven area. She also served as a volunteer driver for FISH of Greater New Haven, delivering food to families in crisis. Mardy was a member of the Church of the Redeemer in North Haven, an affiliation which became quite meaningful to her. She and her husband were also former members of the New Haven Country Club. A private ceremony will be held at a later date. Messages for the family may be sent c/o the Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home, P.O. Box 185175, 2300 Whitney Ave. in Hamden, CT 06518, or online at: www.beecherandbennett.com.
