September 15, 1953 ~ October 24, 2023

Born in: Hartford, CT
Resided in: Tolland, CT

Michael “Mickey” Maheu, 70, formerly of Tolland and most recently of Roque Bluffs, Maine, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in 1953 to the late Ernest and Rita Carbonneau Maheu, Mickey attended South Catholic High School before moving on to study at UCONN. Mickey eventually discovered his love of teaching and began his career as an elementary school teacher at Gilead Hill School. He was not only a teacher, but a lover of education, and he passed on that passion to every child fortunate enough to have been in his class. Mickey was a mentor to many student teachers over his career and not only fostered many successful educators on their career path but created lasting bonds and friendships. He was also a valuable collaborator with his colleagues and peers. Mickey was honored to be named Teacher of the Year in 2004 and was very proud of his creation of the “Green Thumbs” program at Southeast Elementary School in Mansfield, where he concluded his 33-year teaching career.

Teaching not only embodied his love of children but brought him to the love of his life, Bernadette Serignese Maheu. For the last 36 years, they built a life of love, adventure and friendship. Bernie and Mickey made friends wherever life brought them. They raised their family in Tolland along with their beloved pets, creating a beautiful home filled with loving memories with family and friends. The beautiful yard and gardens were meticulously cared for by Mickey and Bernie-one of the many activities they enjoyed together. They retired to Maine, where they made a new life in their dream house, making an additional circle of new friends and enjoying walks on the beach with their newest fur baby Enzo.

Besides his beloved wife Bernie, Mickey leaves to cherish his memory his daughters, Katherine Brown and her husband, Thomas of Hebron, and Jennifer Laraia and her husband, Justin of Columbia. One of Mickey’s proudest distinctions was becoming “Papa” to his seven beautiful grandchildren – Madelyn, Logan, Noah, Aidan and Evelyn Brown of Hebron and Zoey and Jaxon Laraia of Columbia. He leaves four loving siblings, Maurice Maheu and wife, Carla of Florida, Suzanne Newman, and husband Charles of Massachusetts, Lorraine Gagnon and husband, Robert of South Carolina, and Janet Maheu of Ellington, CT. He also leaves a host of loving nieces, nephews, sisters- and brothers-in-law, and friends.

Mickey was one of a kind, with the most generous heart and playful spirit. If you were fortunate enough to meet him, you would not easily forget him. He was one of those rare people who lived his life with the purpose of leaving people and places better than he found them. We are all better for having loved him and been loved by him.

The family would like to thank the staff at Smilow Cancer Center and the hospice nursing staff who cared for Mickey in his final days with love and dignity.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Saturday, November 4th from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at BEECHER & BENNETT FUNERAL HOME, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Mickey, you were a candle in this world, burning bright and spreading warmth wherever you went. So loving, and genuinely kind, you’d illuminate a room with your presence and endless smiles.

Although the rough winds stifled your flame suddenly, and far too soon, your light was so bright and warm it will be seen and felt for many, many days to come.

Thank you for always making me feel like one of your own daughters. You will be missed.

    Love, Jessica

  2. Mickey,
You brought so much love into our lives. You were the big brother I always wanted with a guiding hand and loving heart. Your battle is over. Rest in peace until we meet again.
    Love,
    Annie

  7. Mickey, our family was truly blessed to have you a part of it. I always respected and admired you very much. You’re the best brother-in-law/ brother and friend anyone could ask for and I love you very much. I am truly devastated by your passing. Rest in peace mickey.

  8. Mickey, It’s been an unbelievable feeling knowing that you are no longer with us, but God has prepared a special place for you, because you are a special person, your love and kindness has touched so many people and left us with so many memories , you will be forever in our hearts. Love and miss you, “My back door is always open “. Love, Marie

  9. I never met Mickey. But knowing how much Bernie loved him was enough for me to know that he was a great man. Rest in peace Mickey.

  10. We would encounter Mickey while walking along Duck Cove Road, while he was walking his dog. He was always cheerful and gracious, and obviously happy to be living on Little Kennebec Bay in Maine. I’m glad he and Bernie got to realize their dream of retirement here, and also that he was able to spend his last months back in Connecticut, surrounded by family who obviously loved him.

  11. I have many fond memories spending time with Mickey (Sir), Bernie, Kathy and Jenny. I will always remember Mickey’s infectious smile and kind ways. He would always be there to listen and crack a joke or two. He would support us in all that we did— such as our creative swimming sporting activities in the backyard pool and in filming commercials, VHS style, for school. He never complained but would always smile, guiding us along. Of course, he would be walking about with a dog at his side and wearing a UCONN Huskies tee. He will be forever loved and missed.
    Love,
    Kathy Humphreys, “KKrups”

  12. Please accept our deepest condolences. Mickey was a kind, sweet, nurturing man, who blessed many with his presence. May the special memories you made together help to get through such a difficult time.
    Love,
Renee, Robert Jr., Alyssa & Rosemary

  13. It was my pleasure to get to know Mickey through my work association with Bernie. He was an incredibly nice man and I totally enjoyed my times with him and my heart goes out to his family.
I got to visit them in Maine for a weekend and it was one of the best weekends of my life

  14. Enjoyed working with Mickey at Bolton Center School. He served as our local union president and was always a good listener to help protect teacher’s rights. Rest in peace.

  15. Mickey, I will always remember you as a man with a kind heart, infectious smile and laid back personality. You loved Bernie, Kathy and Jenny with all your heart and they love you so much. You will be truly missed. You are no longer in pain and God will be walking along side you and you will be watching over your precious girls and furry friends.

    May you Rest In Peace!

  16. Mickey, you were and wel always be one of the kindest, smartest, jovial people I was lucky enough to know. You put up with our shenanigans and always had a smile even when you were angry with “ Brenny & Jenna”. We are all going to miss you down here but we know you welcomed with open arms & paws up there. Keep watching over the girls and we will take care of them. Rest in peace
    Xoxo, Brenna

  17. I encountered MIckey many years ago while visiting Aunt Rita and Uncle Yvon Maheu. I used to play with him as a child since we were about the same age. I also encountered him occasionally in the 1980s while working in Connecticut. I am glad that he was joyfully working for many years in elementary education. I saw Mickey recently at the funeral for Uncle Sal Ficaro and later in an event for Aunt Lucille Ficaro. Mickey was taken from us too early. My thoughts and condolences are with his siblings Maurice, Suzanne, Lorraine, and Janet.

  18. A truly unforgettable person who was friendly, caring and possessed a great sense of humor. Mickey is in a better place being rewarded for a life well lived.
