Miriam Catherine Murphy, wife of 57 years to John A. Murphy of Hamden, passed from this life on December 17, 2022 at Masonicare after a long battle with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Miriam led a life of service to others, first as an Extension Volunteer working with Indigenous people in Oklahoma, during which she walked with Dr. King in Selma, Alabama in support of African-American rights. Following her marriage to John in 1966, she taught a modified Roman Catholic religion course at St. Mary’s High School in New Haven, where she was a very popular teacher. After receiving her Masters of Social Work, she worked for 10 years at the CT Mental Health Center and then in a private practice.
Miriam loved to write and had a wonderful sense of humor, and leaves many examples of her talent with words. She was also a great traveler and arranged many experiences with her husband and friends. As an avid NY Yankees fan, she always enjoyed rooting for Derek Jeter through and through.
She will be missed by her husband John and her children, Jacqueline Bushey of Hamden and David Murphy and his wife Taheerah of New Haven. Also survived by grandchildren Natalie Murphy and Tyrese Abdul-Shakour. She was predeceased by her sister, Eleanor Logue.
