Mitchell Anthony Wnek, Sr, age 85, of Whitney Ave., Hamden, passed away Jan. 19, 2009 at Connecticut Hospice. Mitchell was the husband of the late Lucille Grace Manacchio Wnek. Father of Richard D. Wnek, Sr. of Hamden & Mitchell A. Wnek, Jr. of North Haven; grandfather of Richard D. Wnek, Jr, & Jacqueline Wnek both of Hamden & Jennifer Hemstock of Wallingford; brother of Gladys Young, Rose Matthews, Sophie Price & Helen Wnek all of New Haven and the late John, Joseph, Frank & Thomas Wnek. Mitchell also leaves 3 great granddaughters. Born in New Haven on July 9, 1923 he was a son of the late George & Hedwig Wnek. Mitchell was a WWII US Navy Veteran & employee for 35 years at the former Pond Lilly Co. in New Haven. His family would like to thank all the staff at Montowese Health Care Center, CT Hospice in Branford & St. Raphael Hospital, especially Dr. Frank Cardinale & his nurses for their care at his time of need. Funeral from BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave. Hamden, Friday, Jan. 23, 2009 at 9:15 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Friends may visit with his family at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 7 PM. Burial with Military Honors will take place in All Saint's Cemetery, North Haven. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Father Michael McGivney Center for Cancer Care, 1450 Chapel St., New Haven, CT 06511.
